Read the list of questions and review the summary of the October 2014 Synod

February 9, 2015

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In October 2015, the Holy Father will convene the XIV Ordinary Synod of Bishops on the theme of The Vocation and Mission of the Family in the Church and the Contemporary World. In 2013, the Bishops of the world were asked to respond to a series of questions to help gather information to prepare for the Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops taking place in 2014. The responses to these questions were examined thoroughly in an effort to more deeply understand the new challenges of the family.

In preparation for the October 2015 meeting, the Holy See has asked for a broader consultation by each Bishop by developing a new set of questions. This new set of questions consists of three parts: 1) Listening: The Context and Challenges of the Family, 2) Looking at Christ: The Gospel of the Family and 3) Confronting the Situation: Pastoral Perspectives. I would be most grateful if you would take some time to provide your insight to these important questions. I ask that you spend time in prayer and reflection on each question and answer them to the best of your ability. It is not required that you have an answer for each question, nor should you conduct research in order to complete the questions.

The questionnaire is open for all of the faithful of our Diocese to participate. The questionnaire will be available online beginning on Monday, February 9, 2015 and closing on Sunday, March 1, 2015.

I thank you for your time to answer these important questions which will assist me in offering a summary on the Synod’s theme of marriage and the family. If you have any questions regarding this process, please feel free to contact our Communications Director, Marlene Mulford at 217-698-8500 ext. 108.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

+Thomas John Paprocki
Bishop of Springfield in Illinois
