Holy Goalie Takes to the Ice Again

SPRINGFIELD - Bishop Thomas John Paprocki of the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois, will fend off fast-flying pucks for the benefit of Catholic Charities Legal Services (CCLS) program as "Hockey with Bishop Paprocki" faces off Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2015 at the Nelson Center, 1601 North 5th Street in Springfield at 7 p.m. Joining in on the fun is Blackhawks' record holding alum, Grant Mulvey.

The annual fundraiser features Bishop Paprocki, the "Holy Goalie, in the nets against local hockey players of all ages. Since 2010, this unique fundraiser has netted Catholic Charities more than $8,000. Each participant pays a "player's fee" to suit up and fans pay a nominal entrance fee with all proceeds going to Catholic Charities.

"Here's a unique fundraiser that features a Catholic bishop on the ice in full gear and playing the game he loves," said Meredith Curtin, development coordinator at Catholic Charities.

Established by Bishop Paprocki in 2014, CCLS provides pro bono legal assistance to the underserved population within the Diocese of Springfield who do not have the resources to afford legal matters.

"Our first year of operation confirmed the tremendous need for our program, Amy Maher, attorney and CCLS program director, said. "We received more than 100 referrals and provided services to approximately 50 individuals and families caught up in the legal system without the means to deal with their situation."

Ticket prices this year remain at $5 per person and will be available at the door on the night of the game.
