St. Mary School, Mattoon to Close at End of Current Academic Year

MATTOON – In an Apr. 16, 2018 letter to Rev. John M. Titus, pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish, Mattoon, IL, Bishop Thomas John Paprocki accepted his request for permission to close St. Mary School, the parish school of Immaculate Conception Parish, effective with the conclusion of the 2017-2018 school year.

St. Mary School was founded in 1863 as St. Anne Academy in Mattoon, Illinois. In 1893, a new, two-story structure was built and named St. Joseph School. The current school was built in 1963. Kindergarten through fifth grade enrollment for the current school year is 75.

Fr. Titus said, “The trend of decreasing enrollment over the past several years, changing community demographics and the parish financial situation have made this decision necessary.” Immaculate Conception Parish will continue to be committed to the ongoing faith formation of the parish families, youth, young adults and community members of all ages, “said Fr. Titus.

“We realize school closures have a difficult impact on families and we are committed to working with the students, families and faculty through this transition,” said Brandi Borries, diocesan superintendent of Catholic schools.
