Bishop Paprocki to Lead Prayer Rally at Capitol

SPRINGFIELD — Bishop Thomas John Paprocki will lead the public in a prayer rally in front of the State Capitol on Wednesday, June 22 at noon.

Participants in the Freedom Prayer Rally for Religious Liberty will assemble at the Lincoln statue at the State Capitol on South Second St. and Capitol Ave.

The rally is part of the fifth annual Fortnight for Freedom observed throughout the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois from June 21 – July 4 and is sponsored by the diocesan Office for Pro-life Activities and Special Ministries. The theme of this year’s Fortnight is “Witnesses to Freedom” and will focus on the lives of women and men of faith from all over the world who have borne witness to authentic freedom in Christ.

Through prayer, education and public action during the Fortnight for Freedom: Witnesses to Freedom, we will promote the importance of preserving the essential right of religious freedom, for now and the future, for Catholics and for those of all faiths.

Bishop Paprocki created the idea of Fortnight for Freedom at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in November 2011 which resulted in the first Fortnight events taking place nationwide in 2012.

In case of rain, the rally will be in the Howlett Building Auditorium.
