Sacred Relics Exposition Coming to the Cathedral

SPRINGFIELD – The Diocese of Springfield in Illinois will host an exposition and teaching of Sacred Relics on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at 7p.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 524 E. Lawrence, Springfield, IL.  Father Carlos Martins of the Companions of the Cross, a Roman Catholic community of priests, will present a teaching on the holy objects.

Father Martins will display more than 150 relics, some as old as 2,000 years.  Among the treasures will be relics of St. Maria Goretti, St. Therese of Lisieux (the “Little Flower"), St. Francis of Assisi, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Faustina Kowalska.  In addition, a portion of the veil of Our Lady, as well as one of the largest remaining pieces of the True Cross in the world will be on display.

“We are blessed to have this sacred display of holy relics in our diocese,“ said Bishop Thomas John Paprocki. “What a rare opportunity for our people to see and experience such a treasure.”

Those in attendance will be able to examine and venerate each relic. People are encouraged to bring articles of devotion (rosaries, holy cards, medals, etc.) and pictures of ill friends and family members to touch the reliquaries as a means of prayerful intercession. In Church history, many miracles and healings have been worked in the presence of relics, and many have been healed through this ministry

The Catholic Diocese of Springfield in Illinois is 129 parishes in 28 counties in central Illinois.
