Job Title: Maintenance Worker
Location: Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Springfield


The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Maintenance Worker. The Maintenance position provides cleaning and maintenance for all buildings of the parish and grounds. This position ensures an attractive, sanitary and safe environment for staff, parishioners, and visitors. The maintenance position also performs a variety of special cleaning operations and oversees the preparation of facilities for parish and liturgical activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assures the parish buildings are maintained in a clean and orderly manner. Accomplishes this through mopping, vacuuming, dusting, cleaning bathrooms, washing windows, etc. Performs more in-depth cleaning and maintenance such as stripping and waxing the floors.
  2. Keeps the grounds maintained in a clean and safe manner. Responsible for mowing, watering and edging lawns, snow removal of sidewalks and parking lots with plowing equipment and hand shovels, blowing walkways, weeding, pruning, and raking on a seasonal basis. Also maintains parking lot in a safe and clean manner.
  3. Replenishes meeting room and rest room supplies for the purpose of ensuring adequate quantities for daily use.
  4. Consults with administrative personnel for the purpose of planning, prioritizing and scheduling custodial activities and achieving site maintenance objectives.
  5. Performs minor maintenance of the buildings. Accomplishes this by doing minor repair work on the facilities as needed.
  6. Provides other general assistance as needed through setting up chairs, tables in the facility as requested, hauling and moving items and picking up parts or other equipment as requested by the staff.
  7. Assists with putting up and tearing down of seasonal liturgical décor in parish worship space.
  8. Assures the collection and disposal of trash and garbage.
  9. Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns for the purpose of taking appropriate action or notifying appropriate personnel for resolution.
  10. Tests fire alarm and sprinkler systems as needed. Aware of all building codes as required.
  11. Maintains inventory of supplies within budgetary guidelines. Verifies receipt of supplies and stores as necessary.
  12. Completes buildings and grounds inspections on a scheduled basis to ensure the site is suitable for safe operations and identifies any necessary repairs. Reports findings to appropriate personnel and committees.
  13. Attends appropriate staff and committee meetings.
  14. Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and/or Experience

3-5 years previous maintenance experience. High school graduate.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Characteristics

Must adhere to the diocesan code of conduct and agree to represent the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Strong interpersonal communication skills. Basic computer skills.  Electrical and plumbing skills.  HVAC on automated systems is a plus. Able to organize and prioritize time. Ability to work with minimal supervision.  Capable of minor repair work and painting. Maintain confidentiality. Skilled at troubleshooting. Ability to plan and make decisions. Valid driver’s license.

Working Environment

Evenings and weekend work may be required, on-call availability for emergencies. Exposure to climate change, uncomfortable temperatures, and fumes; work with machinery and equipment requiring considerable caution; frequent lifting and standing; work with ladders; must be able to lift 50 lbs. Position is a full-time, non-exempt, hourly position.
