Professor of Philosophy and Church-State Studies to Speak on Religious Liberty

20160628DrFrancisJBeckwithSPRINGFIELD — Bishop Thomas John Paprocki today announced that the Fortnight for Freedom Lecture featuring Dr. Francis J. Beckwith, philosopher, publisher and teacher of politics, jurisprudence, religion, and ethics will be at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception atrium, 524 East Lawrence, Sunday, July 3 following the 10:00 am Mass. Beckwith will present, “To Everyone An Answer: Religious Liberty in a Skeptical Age.”  

“We are fortunate that Dr. Beckwith will join us during our Fortnight for Freedom observance to speak aboutpreparedness in our defense of religious liberty and to carefully explain why our beliefs are reasonable” Bishop Paprocki said.

Francis J. Beckwith is Professor of Philosophy and Church-State studies at Baylor University, where he also serves as Associate Director of the Graduate Program in Philosophy and Co-Director of the Program on Philosophical Studies of Religion. He has authored more than a dozen books including Taking Rites Seriously: Law, Politics, and the Reasonableness of Faith, recently published by Cambridge University Press.

Bishop Paprocki created the idea of Fortnight for Freedom at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in November 2011 which resulted in the first Fortnight events taking place nationwide in 2012.

Prior to Beckwith’s presentation, Bishop Paprocki will celebrate Mass at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral. A light lunch will also be served and reservations are requested to or call 217-698-8500, x137 by June 29.
