Welcome to the
Office for Safe Environment

A safe environment protects our children from harm, including sexual abuse and child molestation. It allows them to feel confident and secure in the classroom and at church.

The National Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People is a landmark document announced by the U.S. Conference of Bishops in 2002. The document is a response to the sexual abuse crisis in the Church and is their "Promise to Protect, Pledge to Heal."

Article 12 of the Charter mandates that all dioceses and parishes establish safe environment programs to help protect children from sexual abuse and child molestation. It will make clear to clergy and all members of the community the standards of conduct for clergy and other persons in positions of trust with regard to sexual abuse. This guideline is the basis for the Diocese of Springfield's safe environment program.

A Solemn Promise - Disclosure and Transparency

Since 2002, our diocese has promoted an environment of awareness and safety that is certainly on par with leading organizations throughout the country, and in some ways more advanced than many, at least in its maturity. Our Diocesan Review Board and Special Panel have been in place and effective for more than 15 years, and our safe environment awareness and prevention efforts have been widely implemented and successful.

The Diocese of Springfield is committed to continue our efforts to work in partnership with local agancies to prevent any type of abuse. For information on how to report any child or adult sexual abuse or misconduct, any financial misconduct, or abuse or misconduct by Bishops, please click on the report abuse button. We also seek to bring about healing where abuse has occurred.
